The N5230C messages below are the ones that point to hardware, followed by what a failed performance test means on this model.
N5230C on-screen error messages
| Message | Meaning and where to look |
|---|---|
| PHASE LOCK LOST | The analyzer cannot phase lock the source. Check the A10 frequency reference board, the Frac-N/multiplier boards and the reference receiver path. |
| SOURCE UNLEVELED | The ALC on the A16 test set motherboard is running open loop. Check the cables between the MASS (A17/A19, or A19 MASSQuad on 4-port units) and A16. |
| UNLEVELED, SOURCE 1 / SOURCE 2 | 4-port units with Options 146/246 only. Source 1 is leveled on A16 (check W31/W32 to the A19 MASSQuad); source 2 on the A17 QABC board (check W74/W75 to the A18 MASSQuad). |
N5230C failed performance test – likely cause
| Failed test | What it points to |
|---|---|
| Source power accuracy / linearity | Run the source calibration adjustment; if it still fails, the source (MASS) is suspect. |
| Source maximum power output | Follow the signal through the separation path (switch, couplers, attenuators) to find the loss. |
| Frequency accuracy | Measure the rear-panel 10 MHz REF OUT; more than about 10 Hz off calls for the 10 MHz reference adjustment. |
| Trace noise | Rarely fails alone; run the receiver calibration adjustment, then suspect the A5 SPAM board. |
| Receiver compression / noise floor / dynamic accuracy | Points to the A20 mixer brick or the A5 SPAM board. |
| Calibration coefficients | Tracking terms only: run the receiver calibration adjustment. Any other error term failing means a hardware fault. |
| System crosstalk | Loose RF cable, or isolation loss in the receivers or the receiver/test set motherboard. Tighten all cables and receiver screws first. |
